Saltwater
Flats Goldens

There are still some good Golden Trevally on some of the flats around Hervey Bay for this time of year and with water temps around the 23 degree mark it was very surprising to see such good numbers of fish tailing in very clear shallow water.

It was the sort of day that only comes along every now and then with cloudless skies 10 knots of wind and very little boat traffic which is perfect conditions for shallow water sight cast fly fishing.

The Golden Trevally were very active and responded without hesitation to a well presented fly but the cast needed to be long and well out in front of the fish to make the presentation as natural as possible.

This allowed the fish to come onto the fly and when they were in visual range of it just simply twitch the fly get their attention and then convince them it was food!! I had some of the best visual hookups I've ever seen.

Sight casting, hooking, landing and then tagging 4 fish from 5 hookups for the session in less than a meter of water really was great fun.

If only the Qld Government could see the benifits of this style of fishing we have here and making species like the Golden Trevally,Snub Nosed Dart[Indo-Pacific Permit] and others like them a recreational only species.

Hervey Bay and other areas along the Qld coast line could have fisheries to rival any other Fly and Lure fishing tourist destination around the world.

But it seems Queensland the Smart State as they choose to call it isn't Smart enough to realise it.
