Hugh worked in the tackle industry for Killwell before he started guiding full time and also represented New Zealand 6 times in the World Flyfishing Championships.
He has guided people like Lefty Kreh, Jimmy Buffet, Billy Conolly and many more onto big New Zealand trout on both the north and south Islands.
Hugh has caught some magnificent fish over many years of fly fishing around the world and it was a honour to be able to guide him onto some good fish around Hervey Bay.
During his stay he managed to add 6 more species to his very impressive tally but unfortunately missed out on barra that jumped off and some big queenfish that were teased up for a shot but wouldn't eat the fly.
He did get to experience some awesome Longtail and Mac Tuna action and also see his hooked Longtail Tuna and Mac Tuna get sharked beside the boat.
He was joined by his and my good mate Peter Cherett for a few days fishing.
Peter has fished in New Zealand with Hugh on a few occasions and between them they had some great stories to tell and we had some great laughs.
The highlight for both guys was their first Longtail Tuna and the Goldens and other species of trevally which weren't big fish but still fun just the same.
The Longtails were a tough quarry for them with their flighty feeding pattern and their tough fighting ability but the guys had some memorable hookups and fights.
For a man of Hugh's age [approaching 71] he certainly stepped up to the plate and gave back what the Longtails gave him, a bloody good battle!.
He won a few and lost a few but that's what makes flyfishing so special, along with the people you get to meet along the journey.
Hugh I know you will be reading this and I trust your flight home was pleasant and safe.
Mate it was a Honour and a Pleasure guiding you and watching you catch some really nice fish and I will keep safe the autographed copy of your book which you gave to me.
I hope your coming season on the Rivers and Lakes is a great one and you catch many trophy trout. Good health and Good fishing to you for many more years to come.
Paul
