Casting for Gold at Fraser Island
|
The excerpt below is from an article published in the USA magazine Destination Fish and now is available in full here
Casting for Gold Article
Paul quipped "quick, lead him by a few feet" I cast the fly trying my best not to make too much movement at such close range. "Leave it, sit, hold on, now strip it slowly, stop..." Paul said. He followed quickly with "He's got it!! Strip tight!". Now all I had to do was land it. That is never a given with Goldens as often you may have just grabbed a little bit of the fleshy lips and not a deep hold with your hookset. The hard running, thudding fight of a Golden will soon sort out any weakness in the connection from hook to backing. All lines were fairly tied and after a huge initial power run, some solid head bumps and a little surface thrashing, the fish was brought to glove - covered hand.

The latest issue of Fly fishing in Saltwaters Magazine has some added interest to me this issue. Yep it has a picture of my ugly mug in it but it is the other kind of " Pumpkin Headed Oyster Cracking Permit" that got it in print.

On Sunday morning during a fishing trip on my home waters of Hervey Bay I came across a school of Longtail tuna near Little Woody Island (a small Island in the Great Sandy Straights between the mainland and Fraser Island). As there was a competition being conducted specifically for Longtails I left them alone so that they were undisturbed for competitors. It was hard to pass up the opportunity to cast to one of my favorite fish but I had some exploring to do while awaiting the flooding tide to rise high enough to allow my boat access to the sand flats.
