With all the recent hype over the plastic toad method I decided to give it a go, I have tried it briefly in the past with no results but never really gave it the time I did on this trip.

A local enjoying the winter sun

It certainly is exciting fishing when you see the bow wave behind the lure and then the surface explosion that follows but I made the mistake of taking the spin outfit with 20lb Bionic braid on it instead of the 30lb and it cost me 2 big fish in the morning but still managed to land fish on it.

I used one of my favorite spin outfits, a 5000 Stradic spooled with 20lb braid, 60lb Penn 10x leader and the Innovator Nitro Viper for the surface plastic fishing.

At this time of year with the fish in the shallows the fishing can be awesome but stealth and long casts are the key as the Barra spook very easily.

Here's a free swimmer I managed to sneek up on for a pic, these fish can be difficult to get to eat but it's the ones you don't see in the shallows that will give you the better chance of a hookup but remember go quietly and slowly.

Another lure that worked for me over the top of weeds was the Yozuri Mag Dater and my favorite for Barra the Arafura Barra in the deeper water to 3 meters.
